Mallory Dillon participated in the Spark Internship program in the spring of 2018. Here’s what she learned during her experience.
1. I feel like part of the team.
They weren’t messing around when they said you’re not just an intern! I truly feel like I have been welcomed as a true part of the team, doing real-life, important work for clients. They don’t send me out on coffee runs, and I’m not shooed away to work on “mock projects.”
The Spark Intern Program sets you up to become a member at TrendyMinds, so be prepared to hold yourself to high standards. At the end of my term, I know I’ll be walking away with concrete, tangible experience for my portfolio.
2. I drink my weight in coffee.
It didn’t take long for me to figure out that coffee is the lifeline around here. The frequent and unmistakable whirl of the espresso machine reminds me that those in the office are all hard at work as well.
3. Everyday is different.
This is something I commonly heard in regards to the agency lifestyle, but they really weren’t kidding!
Throughout my internship, I have gotten to work with a wide variety of clients, all with diverse needs. Not only does this keep me on my toes, but it breaks up the mundane work cycle that many can fall victim to. I have been able to get involved in all types of projects, ranging from client service and project management to film production and web development. I was amazed to see how collaborative the work styles are here and that I’ve gotten the chance to get my hands in so many different facets of TrendyMinds.
4. The days fly by, and I hate to leave.
Time flies when you’re having fun, and it’s all about the work-hard-play-hard mentality around here. Most days, I find that I’ve been so immersed in the work I’ve been doing that I hardly realize it’s time to leave for the day. “Work” isn’t so bad when you love coming in every day!
5. Collaborative spaces are important to a work environment.
I have found it easy to come to work every morning when I know I have such a fun building to walk into. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but there are a variety of collaborative spaces scattered throughout the office that cater to different needs.
Whether we're talking about the one-person focus rooms at Think Ahead Studios, the spacious kitchen, or sunny and inviting rooftop, I know there are always plenty of places for me to get my creative juices flowing.
6. The CEO knows my name.
I had always pictured an agency CEO to be this mysterious, looming figure you only see every once in a while. At TrendyMinds, it’s totally different. I had the opportunity to meet Trevor on my first day, and I am constantly seeing him around the office.
Whether he’s swapping recipes with someone in the kitchen, giving a pep talk for an upcoming pitch, or even popping in to crack a witty joke, it’s really comforting to know that the head of a company cares so much about each individual in the office.
7. I am open to new experiences.
I never thought that my co-workers would care so much about my internship experience. It's really rewarding to see people from every team in the office reaching out to see if I would like to get involved in different projects, sit in on a meeting, or even just pick their brains a bit.
I learned that “yes” is always the right answer when it comes to new experiences! There is so much to learn from the different skill sets and personalities here, so it's important to jump at every opportunity that you get!
The Spark Internship program gives aspiring designers, web developers, video directors, and marketing extraordinaires an inside perspective on what it’s like to work at an agency.
